NORTHERN RAIL has an extensive route network operating services in the counties of Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchest, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, West Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Yorkshir, Cleveland, Durham, Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.

Northern Rail services call at 519 stations, of which they manage 462 themselves.

With a train line crossing the Pennines and winding through the Peak District and Lake District, as well as running along coastlines, Northern Rail has some of the most impressive and scenic train journeys in Britain.

Northern Rail connects the major towns and cities of the north, including rail connections to Carlisle, Chester, Grimsby, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent and Sunderland.

Northern Rail travel the world-famous Settle to Carlisle line is served by Leeds to Carlisle trains; the Lake District is served by the Cumbrian Coast Line and the Windermere branch; services to Whitby and Scarborough run through the North Yorkshire Moors and along the East Yorkshire Coast; the Newcastle - Carlisle line glides down the Tyne Valley; and the Peak District is bisected by the scenic Hope Valley Line from Sheffield to Manchester and the line to Buxton.

Northern Rail have been running under the current franchise since 2004, previously the Northern Rail franchise was operated by Arriva.

Northern Rail Services

Travelers on Northern Rail services are allowed to take bikes on trains where there is space. All Northern Rail trains can accommodate up to two bikes, but motorcycles, tandems, tricycles and trailers are not permitted.

Animals such as dogs, cats and other small pets are permitted on Northern Rail trains, as long as they do not endanger or inconvenience your fellow passengers. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times, unless carried in a closed pet carrier.

Advance Northern Rail Train Tickets

• Not flexible: for travel on a specified Northern Rail train on a specified date

• With Off-Peak train tickets you can travel on any Northern Rail train outside the “peak” hours
• With Super Off-Peak tickets you may be restricted to traveling later, or not in the evening peak
• Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Return tickets enable you to travel back on any date within a calendar month
• Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Day Return and Single tickets are valid for one day only
• Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak train tickets can be booked up to 15 minutes before the departure of your train

• Offer complete flexibility: travel on any Northern Rail train on the date(s) your ticket is valid
• Anytime Single tickets allow you to to travel on the date shown on the ticket or on the next day
• Anytime Return tickets allow you to travel on the date shown on the ticket or within four days
• Anytime Northern Rail train tickets are available on all routes
• Anytime train tickets can be booked up to 15 minutes before the departure of your train
