FIRST SCOTRAIL TRAINS operate 95% of passenger train services in Scotland, linking the major towns and cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness.

ScotRail operates 2000 services a day, and also operates 341 out of the 344 passenger stations in Scotland of which 142 of those stations are staffed.

First ScotRail is the popular choice for express rail services between Scotland's major cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Dundee and Aberdeen.

ScotRail also operates the West Highland Line and the Far North Line which take in some of the most picturesque & breathtaking scenery in Scotland, whilst covering destinations such as Fort William, Mallaig, Oban, Kyle and Wick.

ScotRail Caledonian Sleeper is also operated by ScotRail, linking Scotland with London on a comfortable overnight rail journey. The Caledonian Sleeper runs southbound from Inverness, Aberdeen, Fort William, Glasgow and Edinburgh (plus intermediate stops) and northbound from London Euston, 6 nights a week, it does not operate on Saturdays.

Cyclists are welcomed on all First ScotRail services, with between two and eight cycle spaces for use on each route. However, cyclists should note that cycle reservations are required for services from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh to Inverness, Aberdeen to Inverness, Glasgow to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig, Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, Wick and Thurso, and Newcastle and Glasgow to Stranraer.

First ScotRail Train Tickets Explained

There are three primary groups of train tickets whose prices often vary quite considerably. Huge savings are able to be enjoyed simply by choosing the type of ticket most suited for your First ScotRail journey.

  • With Super Off-Peak tickets you may be restricted to traveling later, or not in the evening peak
  • Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Return tickets enable you to travel back on any date within a calendar month
  • Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Day Return and Single tickets are valid for one day only
  • Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak train tickets can be booked up to 15 minutes before the departure of your train
  • Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak First ScotRail train tickets are refundable

Anytime First ScotRail Train Tickets

  • Offer complete flexibility: travel on any First ScotRail train on the date(s) your ticket is valid
  • Anytime Single tickets allow you to to travel on the date shown on the ticket or on the next day
  • Anytime Return tickets allow you to travel on the date shown on the ticket or within four days
  • Anytime First ScotRail train tickets are available on all routes
  • Anytime train tickets can be booked up to 15 minutes before the departure of your train
  • Anytime First ScotRail train tickets are refundable
  • Anytime train tickets cost more than other types of train tickets
